Please use our category filtering to find which type of product you are looking for. Below are some definitions to help you make a more informed decision.
Biodegradable means that the product can be broken down by natural processes, such as microorganisms and enzymes. Common examples of biodegradable products are plant based materials. Biodegradable objects can be much more than plants, as most people assume. It can be papers, boxes, bags, and other items that have all been created with the ability to slowly break down until they’re able to be consumed on a microscopic level. Products that are labeled as 'biodegradable' can be disposed of in your garbage. However it is important to remember that landfills lack the microorganisms and oxygen required for waste to biodegrade in a timely manner, so you should still try to minimize your use of items that are not recyclable or compostable.
Compostable means that the product can be broken down by natural processes, such as microorganisms and enzymes. Common examples of compostable products are plant based materials that can be broken down by microorganisms, such as leaves falling from trees. The best way to dispose of compostable plastics is to send them to an industrial or commercial composting facility where they'll break down with the right mixture of heat, microbes, and time. If this type of composting facility isn't available in your area, the only other option is to throw them in the trash.
Recycling is a process that recycles products for reuse and/or disposal. The recycled materials will be used to make new products, including those similar and dissimilar to the original product. Recycling also reduces the amount of waste going to landfills. There are many benefits of recycling such as lower energy and water usage, lower air pollution emissions, less landfill usage, and keeping natural resources at their highest quality.
Reusable products are a great way to reduce waste. Reusable products can be used again and again, often for many years. This means that you will be reducing the amount of new products that have to be made each year. The less products that have to be manufactured, the fewer resources will need to be extracted, and the less impact these items will have on our environment. When plastics are exposed to sunlight they break down into smaller pieces which make their way into our oceans where they are consumed by marine animals- this not only affects marine life but also those who eat seafood as well. Use reusable products as often as possible!
At Basic Goods, we use only the best materials that are long lasting and cause the least amount of harm to our planet. Below are some of the amazing raw materials we use and their benefits.
One of the most popular sustainable materials used in the Basic Goods collection is muslin. Muslin is made from cotton and can be dyed with natural dyes. It is thin, breathable, and easily molded to any shape. Muslin has been used for centuries to make clothing, decorations, bedding, and more. We use muslin as a material for our American-made quality basics that are perfect for everyday wear!
Silicone is a great material to use for products, since it’s easy to clean and dishwasher safe. They are also non-toxic and hypoallergenic. It's also good for other household items that you can think of like pot holders, baking pans, muffin tins, hot pad protectors etc.
Bamboo is a sustainable material made from the fastest growing plant on earth and one of the best insulators. It is more durable than wood or carpeting, making it an eco-friendly alternative in most instances. Bamboo has properties that make it impervious to insects and moisture which makes for a long lasting purchase you can rely on.
Cellulose is a natural material that comes from plants and trees. It makes up the cell wall of the plant tissue and gives plants their structure. Cellulose also provides food for many microorganisms.
Hemp fabric is an eco-friendly material derived from the industrial hemp plant. We use hemp in our bath bombs.
Beeswax is made from honey and it is often used as a natural moisturizer, an ingredient in lip balms and skin lotions. It is also commonly used as a sealant for candles, soap, and other crafts. Beeswax helps to create a more sustainable lifestyle because when you use products with beeswax in them it reduces the amount of need for petroleum-based products that are harder to get rid of.
